In this episode, I share why I rely so heavily on using an audio mixer in my podcast recordings. I also explain what a mix-minus is and how to set one up. Check out the new equipment page on the blog!

Cliff,
I made the same mistake with a recent camcorder purchase. I just assumed that it would have an external mic input (because every camcorder I’ve bought in the past has).
Well, when I discovered the omission, I took that camera back fast even though it cost me a $40 restocking fee. I got the next level up that did have an input.
Sadly, a lot of mid-grade camcorders are stripping the mic input out.

Cliff, What similarities! I also can’t agree more with the mix minus and mixer setup. It is easier for me to bring a Skype call in separately than trying to to do it all internally.
I, too, use PodProducer, mix-minus, and the rest. I record with PodProducer and use a Marantz for the backup. I also use a separate UB-802 (the first one I started with) that I bring input in from the “Skype laptop” or the digital hybrid and output to a single input on the bigger Yahmaha mixer. This keeps me from having to make changes for when I do a skype call or a digital hybrid call.
Ditto the rest!

This is a very informative podcasting tutorial - exactly what I needed to hear. I just bought an “all in one” kit (M-Audio), but I’m deciding if I should take it back and get a small setup similar to what you described -I’ll have a co-host via Skype. Again, your service to the community is invaluable.
